Facts: Isofix

What is Isofix?

Isofix is an alternative mounting system for child car seats that can be used instead of the car's seat belt. It consists of two small metal brackets that are securely anchored to the car's rear seat. These brackets are located between the seat cushion and the backrest.

How does Isofix work?

Isofix car seats are equipped with hooks that click into these brackets. The exception is Isofix infant car seats, which require a base station that is also attached via Isofix. This eliminates the need for securing with the car seat belt.

Additional Attachment Points

Forward-facing car seats often use a "Top Tether," an additional strap that attaches to a point in the trunk or the back of the car seat. Rear-facing car seats (Reboarders) commonly use a support leg that rests on the car floor. In cars with storage compartments in the floor, it's crucial to ensure these compartments are filled to maintain safety.

Weight Restrictions

The ISOFIX standard (ISO 13216) limits the combined weight of the child and the seat to 33 kg. This limit also applies to seats approved under the i-Size regulation (R129). Group 2/3 booster seats, which often have Isofix connectors, still rely primarily on the car seat belt to secure the child.

Pros and Cons

Pros:

  • Isofix car seats are easier and faster to install.
  • The risk of installation errors is lower.
  • The seat is more securely anchored in the car.

Cons:

  • Weight limit of 33 kg.
  • Isofix is not available in all vehicles, especially older models.
  • Reboarders without Isofix can be used longer because the car seat belt has no weight limit.

Expert Tip

Some Reboarders can be installed with both Isofix and the car seat belt. This allows you to use Isofix up to the weight limit and then switch to the seat belt for extended use.
