Hot Summer Days: Just a Few Minutes Can Become Life-Threatening for Children
Hot Summer Days: Just a Few Minutes Can Become Life-Threatening for Children
Summer, sunshine and warm temperatures – for many families, that is simply part of a great holiday. But especially on hot days, one danger is often underestimated: the heat inside a car.
Even in summer, of course, we still need to get from A to B. Whether it is to the beach, the hotel, a restaurant, the supermarket or the next excursion destination. And that is exactly why it is important to remember: Never underestimate the heat inside a car!
Of course, we all know that you should never leave your child alone in the car when temperatures are high. What is often underestimated, however, is how quickly the temperature inside a vehicle can change.
The Car Heats Up Faster Than You Think
Seats, dashboards and interior panels are heated considerably by sunlight. However, the heat that is generated cannot escape sufficiently. A greenhouse effect is created inside the vehicle.
But what does this mean in practice?
After just 30 minutes, the temperature inside the car can be more than 15 degrees higher than the outside temperature. Even if it is “only” 20 degrees outside, a car exposed to the sun can become an extreme burden for a child within a very short time.
At even higher outside temperatures, the interior can heat up even faster and more intensely.
Even leaving a window slightly open is not enough to counteract the heat build-up quickly enough.
Children Are Particularly at Risk
Babies and young children are more sensitive to high temperatures than adults. Their bodies are not yet able to regulate heat as effectively. Children also sweat less and can therefore lose fluids more quickly.
There is also the child car seat or infant carrier. For a safe journey, it is essential that the child is well protected and securely positioned in the seat. Especially on hot days, however, this can cause additional heat to build up between the child’s body and the seat.
That is why one very simple rule applies:
Never leave children alone in a car.
Not just to quickly pay for fuel.
Not to quickly buy something in a shop.
Not to quickly get something from the hotel or holiday apartment.
Not even if the car is parked in the shade.
Not even if you are “only going to be a minute”.
And not even if the windows are slightly open.
Simply never. That is the rule.
How to Protect Your Child on Hot Days
A few simple measures can significantly reduce the heat-related strain during a car journey:
- Park in the shade whenever possible.
- Before setting off, open the doors and windows and thoroughly air out the vehicle.
- Use sunshades on the rear windows.
- Take enough drinks with you for the journey.
- Plan regular breaks, especially on longer journeys.
- Check hot seat-belt buckles and metal parts before securing your child.
- During longer periods when the car is parked, cover child car seats with a light-coloured cloth or use a suitable seat cover or anti-sweat liner.
Important: Of course, these measures do not replace the most important rule: Never leave your child alone in the car.

Our Conclusion
On warm and sunny days, a car can heat up to extreme temperatures within a very short time. Babies and young children are particularly vulnerable to high temperatures because their bodies are not yet able to regulate heat as effectively as an adult’s body.
That is why the rule is simple: Never leave children alone in a car. Prepare carefully for journeys on hot days and make sure there is enough cooling, drinking water and regular breaks during the journey.
With the right preparation, a well-ventilated vehicle and suitable summer accessories, there is nothing standing in the way of longer car journeys during the warmer months.
And don’t forget the most important rule:
Never leave a child or a pet alone in a car.
