Traveling with Kids - Helpful Tips

Finally, Vacation!

It’s done, vacation is just around the corner! And it’s desperately needed. Balancing work with taking care of the kids all year long is more than just exhausting and draining. What could be better than spending a relaxing vacation by the sea, enjoying nature, or embarking on exciting city trips? But hold on, there’s one or more hurdles to overcome first: the journey to the desired destination.

And that journey can be quite challenging. Crying and whining kids in the back seat, boredom, hunger, thirst, or needing to use the bathroom. There’s always something. We've gathered the following tips to help simplify your preparation and make the trip a success, so that the first day of vacation isn’t ruined by bad moods!

Car Trips

1. Plan plenty of time for the journey

Nothing is more stressful than racing from A to B under time pressure with cranky kids. Especially since something unforeseen always happens then.

2. Choose the day and time strategically

No one wants to be stuck in traffic. And everyone sets off on the first weekend of vacation. Pay attention to the right time and day if possible!

3. Plan breaks with activities

No one likes sitting for hours, especially not kids! Smart and forward planning can save you a lot of whining and do good for your kids’ mobility.

4. Comfortable clothing and seat covers

Loose and airy clothing, especially on warm days, can make a big difference. The onion principle (layering) is key here!

For warm days, it's also a good idea to get an anti-sweat cover to reduce sweating. And with a summer cover that both cools and protects the seat from dirt, you’ll be on the safe side.

5. Is the car vacation-ready?

Is the car fit for a long trip? And is the trunk really big enough for all the luggage?

6. UV protection

Car windows do not protect against harmful UV rays. Sunscreen and sun shades would be a good solution here.

7. Pack luggage securely and keep essentials accessible

It’s always a good idea to load the car the day before departure. This way, you’ll definitely notice what else needs to come along and what’s better left at home.

As a practical holder for the tablet and also as a kick protector for the seat, we recommend the chicco protective cover for the car seat

8. A good car seat and comfortable sitting

Sitting for hours is a challenge for anyone. The right car seat can make a big difference!

But even in the best car seat, it can become uncomfortable. For sleeping legs and tingling feet, we have a solution: The KneeGuard Kids 4, a footrest that stops children’s legs from kicking the seat. (Get it from Kindersitzprofis.)

9. Sleeping

Sleeping in the car seat can be quite uncomfortable. You can counteract this with a sleep pillow – available for babies and children. The sleep pillow from sandini keeps the head in the safety zone of the car seat and provides optimal protection even in a side impact. It`s available for kids and babys.

10. Eating

On a long trip, hunger can become a big issue, as boredom can make you hungry! Those who start the trip with well-portioned fruits and vegetables are well and healthily prepared. And no one would object to emergency gummy bears!

11. Entertainment and playing

If the kids are occupied and not bored, half the trip is already accomplished.

But what to do to prevent boredom from arising? For little kids, we recommend Quiet Books in many different versions and for almost all age groups! The small fabric books are a great distraction and also promote hand-eye coordination. Since the books are so soft, they don’t become dangerous projectiles in an accident.

12. Nausea

Travel sickness is unfortunately widespread and can ruin the entire vacation right from the start. But what can you do about it?

For some kids, it’s enough if they don’t look down but out the window. Small healthy meals instead of large fatty portions can also help.
